I can see their point.

So can I.... Sort of.
I fly on a regular basis and know the briefs pretty much of by heart. By the time they start the brief I've already checked how to operate the exits on the flight safety card. All I want to do after I've done that is start reading a book on my kindle.

Exactly. For regular fliers the safety instructions are a useless waste of time. But for first timers or those that don't fly regularly, they are important.

The problem is, the air hostesses can't tell the difference, so they don't know if the message is getting across or not.

On the other hand, a hard, thin object is going to do more damage flying through the air than a newspaper or a paperback bodice ripper...

I dunno, have you seen how big some of those Game of Thrones books are? One of those could quite easily kill a child just by falling on them.

Forget a small hard thin object. In a crash scenario I'd be much more worried about the suitcase sized hand luggage that people seen to take on board these days, coming out of the overhead locker and crushing me.
