It is quite common in high sped accidents, where the impact is not head on. Going sideways off the road and into a tree can do that. I suspect very high speed was involved.

Looking at the uprated exhaust, I think you're probably right. Who knows what state the rest of the car was in, or what other mods he'd done.

I'm guessing they'll be looking for brake marks to check speed. If the driver even broke at all :S

Mythbusters covered this. Although it was head on with a snow plough. Either way the engine block held the car together.

In this case though with it being side contact I can see that happening fairly easily.

Front wheel drive too. So the only thing going front to back was the exhaust. I imagine the chassis was rusted to bits.
