Facebook was the firm that hosted a conversation by one of Fusilier Lee Rigby's killers five months ahead of the attack, the BBC has learned.

Michael Adebowale said he wanted to kill a soldier and discussed his plans in "the most graphic and emotive manner", according to the UK's Intelligence and Security Committee.

The ISC said the social network did not appear to believe it had an obligation to identify such exchanges.

Facebook said it does tackle extremism.

It seems to be “blame the internet companies” week. I don’t know who the “internet companies” are - it is such a nebulous term, bit it appears to be the usual gaggle of FaceBook, Twitter and Google. The Sun today seems to be dead certain that FB has “blood on its hands”.

Lets not forget that our security services knew about these people, and surely if they were on the radar, then they’d be, well, flagged by GCHQ’s , er, *ahem* monitoring station. Which, of course they don’t have. ;)

It's Facebook, in fact. Malcolm Rifkind has never said anything negative about the security services in his entire life. Putting him in charge of the enquiry made it virtually certain MI5/6 would be absolved from any significant blame.
