Tom tom has now landed in the app store for a non too inconsiderable sum of £59.99.
At this price any cannibilising of the hardware sets I assumke will be offset by the huge profit margin on the software and if it proves to be a hit, then could we see the demise of the stand alone sat nav?
Countries currently covered are the UK and Ireland. They also have an in car kit for your iphone to make it into the complete navigation package

They have a Western Europe app for £79.99

I will get this over replacing my Tom Tom device.

There are no details on the car kit at the moment.

You generally get maps for the country you are in, maybe its neighbours.

I get D, A and CH for €69 or Western Europe for €99

The thing you pay for with a sat-nav is actually the licence for the maps and the meta-data that allows the system to navigate across them. A 'blank' sat nav would actually be pretty cheap. That's true regardless of whether the package includes the hardware or not.

Yep, the maps are what costs the big money. A new set of maps for my sat nav would set me back about €300, so the Tom Tom price isn't bad.

thing is, i already own (licence) maps for all of western europe on my TT1 .. would be nice if I could use those on my iphone .. guess that'll never happen.

I've just read the blurb on the app store.

Is the IQ routing the technology where devices communicate to calculate where there is traffic, and actively route around it? That's pretty cool if it is, as it's really expensive in the standalone units.

I've seen rumours that the iPhone car kit will be £99 plus VAT and include the app. That's a bit of a bargain if you ask me.

The US pricing is $99 for the app, $199 for the app + car kit, so it will probably be 199 quid for both... :?
