I wonder what Uber are supposed to have promised, if presumably none of the other companies have background checks.

Uber are mental to continue operating until this 'gets sorted'; in India it seems you can almost guarantee another driver will rape someone.

Don't see what Uber has to do with it. The man's a rapist regardless of the taxi's method of payment.

The problem is, they are running a taxi service without any of the training, background checks, licensing, insurance etc.

They say they are not a taxi service, yet what they are offering is exactly a taxi service, but through a phone-app as opposed to a phonecall.

In Germany you can only get commercial insurance to carry passengers if you have a taxi licence. That means that all Uber vehicles are currently uninsured! Yet Uber claim this isn't a problem and carry on regardless.

For me, apart from the personal tradgedy, which might still have happened with a normal taxi, the problem is Uber's lack of regard for rules and regulations that are required to run a taxi service. If I take a cab, I want to know I am insured and that I am as safe as possible. If the Uber drivers aren't checked like drivers for other taxi companies and their vehicles aren't subject to the same stringent checks, then I am less likely to use them.

That is the problem, they are acting illegally, they aren't being disruptive, they are forcing their drivers to be criminals...

If they tried to work within the law or they lobbied to get the laws changed, before they started their services, then I wouldn't have a problem with them, but they aren't being "disruptive", they are just ignoring the law.

Yeah, there's a distinct feel of 'what, it's illegal there? Well, we're is the US so we're out of reach, sod em, do it anyway' about them.
