The competition can spend more too. That cancels out the effect, but costs more.
It's like the opposite of when fag adverts were banned. All companies spend less on advertising, but none lost market share as they all had the same rules. Profits went up massively in the short term.

I thought all the political parties were in debt. I though most of their money comes from party members and Rich donors (Tories) or the unions (Labour).

Didn't there used to be rules on how much political parties could spend on elections? Or was that individual MPs?

I'm not sure. There could be as they don't spend 'American' amounts on elections.
