It really should be made clear initially what's required. It can be annoying on Android devices with apps that insist on internal memory.

TBH I don't see this getting very far; the devices aren't advertised on "free" capacity, and at no point do Apple force you to upgrade the OS.

This has been true for all operating systems for the last 40 years or so. I don't see the problem. A new operating system usually has more features than the previous version and therefore requires more space. It has always been the case.

Likewise, during the upgrade process an operating system has always needed a large amount of free space for storing the upgrade image and/or temporary files. With iOS 8, attaching it to a PC or Mac allows it to be upgraded without requiring that extra space on the device.

Rare for me to be on Apple's side, but computers have never been advertised with the HDD size after the OS has been installed.
