Yes, but all the constituencies the whisky distilleries are in are in Scotland, and the Tories don't give a flying one about them. |

Technically yes however different rates of duty appear to apply to different alcoholic beverages - for example, you appear to pay more in duty on sparkling wine than on wine - clickety In theory there's nothing to stop the government from splitting Whiskey out of the more general Spirits category and assigning a lower rate of duty. If they did so however you can bet the other types of spirits would demand special treatment as well. Having said that, how many other spirits have the same level of importance to the UK as whiskey? I have no idea, relatively speaking, how much gin and vodka actually gets made in this country rather than just imported. |

The issue would be that in Europe its basically only the the UK & Ireland that make whisky so it might fall foul of EU rules to have a special tax rules for local produce Also the gin I drink is make in the UK |

Indeed. The french are already up in arms about plans for minimal alcohol prices in Scotland. They're arguing that they will lose out as French wine is cheaper than British wine. With a minimum price the lower end bottles from both countries would be the same price, so people would be less likely to buy the French. |
