Maybe if the government focused on jobs in parts of the country other than London........ |

There's little any government can do to move jobs out of popular cities to less popular ones. If you make your good city worse you have no control over which country businesses relocate to, let alone which city. If you promote a vibrant second city, it mostly just cannibalises its neighbours. Fixing the London housing issue is technically quite easy, if politically improbable. New council housing (objectionable to Tories); relax some green belt restrictions (annoying lots of Nimby types); a new one of those garden cities (more angry Nimbies). Then you just need a couple of sewage works, a reservoir and a train station or two and the job is done. You have to ignore the baying mob of idiots who think that price controls where supply is constrained counts as a solution, but those chumps are never happy. |
