clicky

Apple's iTunes Store has seen some pretty good growth in the last couple of years; it's currently the most popular online music store, and that apparently isn't all, according to MarketWatch. Just recently, iTunes managed to reach 25% (rising from 21% in 2008 and 14% the year before) of all music sales in the United States, meaning that it is now number one in both categories, be it digital or physical.

iTunes is now at 69% of all digital sales in the U.S., with the closest rival being AmazonMP3, at 8 percent.

Just goes to show, when you make the process simple enough and easy enough and market it correctly, people will use it...

Install it on every mac and insist on using itunes with the ipod, complete with carefully located link to itunes store. There's also the fact that importing other mp3's not bought from the store or ripped from CD's with itunes is rather hit & miss. Personally I prefer 7digital, but itunes is a bit more convenient, even if you can only get 192kbs mp3's once you convert the m4a's.

I imported around 4K MP3s into iTunes on Windows and OS X and it didn't bat an eyelid... That said, none of them were purchased, all ripped from my CD collection over the years on Linux or Windows.

I've downloaded a couple of apps and plenty of free podcasts through the iTunes Store. It is a very easy and convinient method, it certainly makes web browser based purchasing, along with a third party player seem complex.

This is the genius of the iTunes store, it is all in one interface. I think the Zune Store for Windows works in a similar way?

Edit: Just got a message from the Apple Store, UPS failed to deliver the package, here is the tracking number, please contact them and arrange for re-delivery or collection... I haven't experienced that level of feedback from other suppliers,

Which would account for what single-digit percentage of computers out there?

You do know you can happily use iTunes and an iPod without ever venturing near the store, don't you?

For you, maybe; but then if you're going to be using dodgy operating systems and inadequate software you're asking for trouble. ;)

I think big_D has the real reason spot on: make it easy to use and people will use it. Simple as.

Another reason making it a bit better is the option to buy iTunes vouchers from Tesco and the like. If you don't have a card or don't want to use it online no worries take your good old fashion cash to the shop and you will be on your way.

I must say I've never had a problem importing music with iTunes with OSX or Windows.
