Given that the exploding iPod last month was down to the father having dropped it first (possibly damaging the battery pack?), it wouldn't surprise me if this is similar. I hope it isn't like the Sony battery issue a couple of years back, where there were impurities in some batteries, meaning millions of laptops from dozens of manufacturers had to be recalled... ![]() |

I've always admired the grenade-like qualities of the ipod touch and iphone. It won't be long before they are banned from aircraft, along with toothpaste and nail clippers. "Want to blow up a plane? There's an app for that." On a more serious note, it would be good to see apple hold their hand up and admit they dropped the ball here, just to show they're not completely ignorant. |

Do you mean arrogant? But what if it isn't a fault? The only report with any firm evidence so far is the English guy who dropped it, then it started making a hissing noise... I'm not saying there isn't a problem, but the one that is best documented certainly doesn't sound like a faulty iPod or battery. |

Either ignorant or arrogant - both work. I've dropped many a phone and mp3 player - none of them have hissed at me or exploded...I'd say it was a fault! |

I'm sure a lot of other people have dropped iPods as well and they haven't exploded - I've seen a few hit the floor. There was a guy who shot his iPhone last week (upset over the App Store stuff), that didn't explode either, just had two 9mm holes in it! ![]() It is possible that there was a manufacturing fault on that one, Friday afternoon machines have always existed, in every branch. Given how many millions have been sold and how many stories have cropped up, it doesn't sound like a general fault, at this point. Apple's PR has just made the situation worse, by trying to get a gagging clause in the contract to refund the price of the iPod to the family... I'll watch with interest to see if this turns into a general problem, but at the moment it seems to be a very small percentage of machines which have had problems (0.000001%?). |

I dropped my iphone twice on to a brick pavement & it didn't explode. THe screen shattered but that was about it. |
