It's not exactly what I think a kid might dress up as, but the mum makes some very good points.

The mother was interviewed on BBC news. She sounded just like Philomena Cunk. Tone of voice, inflection. Didn't come over as if she had truly thought this through. Being teacher, she should have known what would have been appropriate.

The school concerned should also have been more rigid in its definition of what was appropriate for the day. Characters from children's books only.

The idea is obvious and has been for ages - children go to school dressed as their favourite literary character. It's about getting kids enthusiastic about reading. Christian Grey is no 11 year old's favourite literary character (the fact he may be anybody's favourite literary character is a damning inditement on us as a culture). This kid's mum hijacked the idea and sent him to school dressed as the character because she thought it was funny. I heard her interviewed and she said that was the reason she did it. She's plainly a dick.
