The Tories won’t say where they plan to make cuts - which tells us that either they themselves don’t know, OR they do know and it will be damaging to their election prospects. Either way, lack of transparency looks rather iffy to me. My father in law has an interesting theory (and he’s a rampant Tory supporter too) which is this - the overall strategy for each party is not to win - but to lose. Why? The mess is far worse than we are being led to believe, it’s possibly worsened in the last five years, and no one wants to commit political suicide over having to deal with it. The Tories know what the real picture is, as do the Lib Dems, and Labour are smelling a smell they don’t like. So a hung parliament is, in fact, the desired goal. |

The Tories won't say where they plan to make cuts because there are no votes in telling. The rest of your father in law's theory is just the plot from a Rik Mayall sitcom in the 90s. To squeeze that much cash out of social security spending in the next parliament you can go only two ways. One is as described there, and the other is to target pensioners by means testing the state pension. The second option is clearly preferable for technical reasons, but is also legally dubious, and liable to cause a bit of a voter problem. |
