US Senate in urgent surveillance debate as deadline looms - BBC News

What a crock - they've hacked and continue to hack the backbone of the internet, but are still pretending they won't just carry on illegally monitoring millions of their own people.

Quote:
If a deal is not reached by midnight, security services will lose the ability, in addition to bulk phone data collection, to monitor "lone wolf" terror suspects and to carry out "roving wiretaps" of suspects, under the provisions of the Patriot Act.

Surely if there is probable cause, they can get a warrant anyway to do those things. You know, legally and above board?

Quote:
Ever since National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden revealed that the phone records of tens of millions of Americans were being collected en masse by the NSA, the pressure to revise the programme has been intense, BBC Washington correspondent Gary O'Donoghue says.

And what about the billions of non-Americans that are also being illegally spied upon by the US and their allies? I guess you can't be outraged at being spied upon, unless you are American?
