Tesco expands charity food scheme

Yet another reason why I hate Tesco.

Quote:
Leftover food from 10 of its UK stores will now also be available to local charities through the UK food redistribution charity Fare Share.
Tesco said of the 55,400 tonnes of food it threw away in the last year, 30,000 tonnes could have been eaten.

Only 10 stores? Well that is going to make such a difference

Small beginnings perhaps but they need to start somewhere. Plus this will put some pressure on the other supermarkets to follow suit.

If you've tried Tesco fruit, no wonder they can't sell it :S

You need to calm down.
it was a general "you", rather than directed at you personally. Maybe I should've said "if one has tried Tesco" but that doesnt sound right when talking about them.

Its only surplus because its either

a) 'fresh produce' that won't be cosmetically appealing enough to be saleable tomorrow (i.e. it's almost off/stale)
b) Tinned/packaged produce that is either at or near it's 'sell by' date.

So probably a lot of the food they give away will only be edible for a relatively short period of time. So if you give it to someone they have to eat it soon, or it's going to get thrown away anyway. But of course then it's not Tescos that is wasting food is it?

Now we all know sell by dates are actually bollocks but still.. what we're talking about here is Tescos giving the contents of their bins to poor people. A company that made £2billion per quarter profit and was massively implicated in the workfare scandal. They want credit for this? Really? [lifted] off.
