I think the logic required to get somebody other than Peter Parker to be Spiderman would be tortuous at best - "What, we were BOTH bitten by a radioactive spider? What are the chances?' They could obviously do it but it would look really forced.

Why go to all that effort? Just wrote a new story with a new hero. That hero can be gay, that hero can be Asian, that hero can be a hermaphrodite martian if they want it.
