Discovery/Eurosport get Exclusive Olympics rights

Be interesting to see how this goes in the UK, where The Olympics is a Protected Event. Is Eurosport available on Freeview?

Is Eurosport a 'free' channel on Sky? Is that how they might get around this?

Since when? I always used to watch it on freeview here in Germany (Eutelsat?)

But I must admit, I haven't watched a sport channel since 2007.

It looks like it isn't. Paid package on Sky.

Yep, it looks like since they were bought out by Discovery, that their free to air service has disappeared. :(

It‘s on one of the paid for packages on Virgin Media as well. They also show a lot of Olympia horse antics at Christmas, which makes the wife happy.

So the Olympics aren’t one of the protected “crown jewels” which have to be aired on free to view channels in the UK then.

Did you read the bottom of the article:

Quote:
As part of UK law under the Broadcasting Act 1996 amended by the Television Broadcasting Regulations 2000 and the Communications Act 2003, the Olympic Games are "Listed" and must be shown on free-to-air TV.

As Ofcom states: "The Secretary of State may add events to and delete events from the list at any time, but only after consultation with the BBC, the Welsh Authority, Ofcom and the holder of the rights for the event in question.

somehow I can imagine the Tories trying to make away with listing of events.

Politically risky meddling with free to air transmission of the Olympics.

Indeed. If it's not on freeview there could be issues.
I'll be pissed off if I miss the boarder cross at the next winter olympics.

+1. Plus they'll have Big Air for the first time. That would be awesome television.
