That would put Intel in a rather sticky position. Would such a deal make it past competition authorities?

If they sell off the CPU division, why not. They wouldn't want their inferior CPU's but would want their graphics. I doubt that would be in issue for the competition commission as nvidia are big rival, so no monopoly. Let some spin off company crash and burn with the CPU's.

The problem would be "better" integration of AMD chips into MS software. That would mean it would be irrelevant whether nVidia is a big competitor in the graphic chip space.

If anything, the ARM chip division would be the most interesting part for them, if they stay in the mobile device field. But it is very competitive, I don't see it being worth the investment, new foundries cost hundred of billions of dollars.

Surely, it would still have to be addressed through the Direct X API, wouldn't it?

Nothing costs hundreds of billions of dollars, except wars and international bailouts. Five to ten billion, maybe, but not hundreds.

Yeah, not enough coffee this morning. Tens of billions. Samsung invested 14.7 billion in a new ARM plant a year or two ago.
