I was rather amused that most of the gossip sites seemed to be running with the 'One Direction star having a baby' headline. I know they're a bunch of dribbling simpletons in the main, but you'd think they'd have a grasp of basic human biology.

Exactly. It's all about him, the woman involved appeared, in their minds at least, to be almost entirely ancillary to the whole thing. If there's a more immediate way to show how utterly screwed up the presses perspective is, I can't think one.
