The pilot of a display team aeroplane has been killed in a crash at the CarFest motoring event in Cheshire.

Kevin Whyman, 39, was flying a Folland Gnat aircraft that came down near the event at Oulton Park at about 14:00 BST.

BBC presenter Chris Evans, CarFest's founder, confirmed his death and said the pilot's family had been informed.

I posted about this team last year. They were flying over the Blackwater Estuary off Mersea Island last year, obviously practicing. Very exciting to see.

The Gnat is the aircraft the Red Arrows used to use, they switched to the Hawker Sidley Hawk in the late 70s or early 80s, I think.

Real shame, but no real information yet on what went wrong.

Very sad. It'll be interesting to hear how Evans approaches this on his radio show next week. I was naturally expecting him to bang on about how great it was for a couple of days, maybe as a bit of a precursor to new Top Gear but its going to be rather tricky if not wildly inappropriate to do that now.

They appear to be flying the remaining Gnats from North Weald. One flew north of the house yesterday. Heard it twice, saw it on its return flight.
