Soldiers have been dying needlessly on selection for decades - if you wanna be a sociopath about it, that's a waste of serious time, money and manpower if nothing else.

Indeed. My mate had to have his heart restarted after collapsing on an endurance test for the army. The officer in charge wouldn't let them have a drink (on a vety hot day) even though two of them had already done a rescheduled swimming test before endurance test. They both ended up in hospital. He was discharged on medical grounds after that.
