Apple 'made Jeremy Clarkson bid as it plans Netflix-style service' | Media | The Guardian http://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/s ... netflix-tvAmazon don't give much of a crap, but Apple has an image that really wouldn't have sat well with lazy racism if it came to it...

I was reading about 'Apple as content creator' last night. While that was the first I'd heard of this particular rumour, it actually started to make sense to me. Everything seems to make sense, it has all the bits there to play with. Whether the company actually puts all the bits together or not remains to be seen.

Initial thought was, 'Yeah, why not when you've already got the infrastructure?' Any sort of success and they could probably embrace and crush the streaming competition later too as a one-stop shop.

They don't have the infrastructure, particularly. Or at least, they didn't used to have. Streaming is not the same as 'a cloud syncing service' like say DropBox or iCloud. The requirements in terms of how you manage your data storage, how you index and retrieve things andd optimise your throughput are very, very different. Apple stuff is (as far I've seen public details of it) appears optimised for scattered data recall (i.e for small amounts of data from lots of people at once) not streaming. Streaming audio is a lot easier than streaming HD video too, so the Apple Music service isn't necessarily a great pointer they're ready to take on netflix.
None of this is beyond the whit of Apple of course, or at least not beyond the whit of people they could afford to hire. And it does sound like a better fit for the infrastructure Apple is in the process of building. but I wouldn't bet a house on Apple announcing their own netflix/Amazon video clone on the 9th.

As I said, all the bits are there, they just need a little refining before they could be put to this particular use. It's not like the company doesn't have the cash to hire people/services to get this rumour off the drawing board - not that it is actually ON the drawing board, but I bet this proposition has been thought about within the higher-ups in the company.

Apples project of AppleTV has been going a while & the box itself has never seemed to have all the features it could have.
They stream movie trailers etc so they've got a bit of infrastructure there and it'd make the box a lot more useful

They are allegedly the only device maker that has Netflix servers within their CDN.

There's a bit of speculation that the September 9th thingy might cover some AppleTV news. But I seem to recall that was hoped for at the last one. Who knows.
