Now I can't have a pint in a GLASS!?

Seriously, are there any free-thinking adults left in this Country? The way the government carry on you'd be forgiven for thinking that there weren't. This is what happens when the reigning culture is "OMG, ban EVERYTHING!!!11111!"

I hope the bastards responsible for this line of thinking are proud of themselves. :?

Home Office Seeks to Replace Pint Glasses with Plastic Ones

We have glasses over here and it isn't a problem.

Surely the Home Office should be tackling the problems that causes the use of beer glasses as weapons, rather than banning glasses? :?

Britain has used glass as the main material for holding beer for a few centuries and it was never a major problem. That seems to show that the problem isn't the glasses themselves, but the people who wield them these days...

Although I agree with the both of you

Quote:
"We could do something more radical, by looking at the whole shape and substance of the pint - we could come up with something that is completely different to glass.

"Remember that years ago people used to drink out of pewter tankards. It could be quite a significant paradigm shift."

I still wouldn't mind this. If we moved back to pewter tankards it would be more acceptable for me to carry mine around with me :P Though pewter and cider don't get along...

In all seriousness, it's stupid. Why not ban drinking all together? That'd get rid of all the drink related crime surely!? </sarcasm>

This government are a pathetic hand-wringing lot. As big_D says, it's not necessarily the glass that's the problem it's the alcohol (when consumed in excess) but of course nothing would be done about that because of all that lovely Tax that goes to fill government coffers. How old do they think we are? Perhaps we all need government-approved bibs too. After all, someone could slip on spilled lager even if it is ALL NEW 'Elfan'Safety 0.1% strength Bitter.

I'm not sure there's that much of a story here TBH.

I can't find anything anywhere that suggests the Home Office is planning to ban glassware, merely that they've commissioned a design for plastic glasses. And some pub association saying they don't want them made compulsory.

Slow news day? *shrug*

You could serve pints of beer/lager/ale/whatever in giant cock shaped plastic bottles that you have to suck the end of to get anything out.

I'm sure a lot of people would stop drinking if you did that.

We have drinking problems here, as well, with people drinking to excess, but we don't have such a problem with violence. It seems to me that there is some underlying factor in British society, which isn't present in Germany society.

What normally happens down here is on a normal day pint glasses are used, but if there is a chance that a football-supporting neanderthal or several are likely to be in the area, the plastic ones are brought out.

The UK has a very unhealthy relationship with alcohol. It is often sold at a lower price than bottled water and soft drinks, nightclubs often have no seating and with music turned up so loud you can't talk to people, so all that is left to do is stand and drink. Pubs are open later than cafe's and many small town amenities are limited to "the pub" and "the church". Since we've also marginalised Christianity, that just leaves the pub. Thanks to the drinking age being set at 18, those under 18 are stuck in the park drinking a bottle of Strongbow they've managed to coerce someone to buy for them.

If you go on holiday anywhere, chances are any problems at the resort are caused by Brits, besides the German towel thing...

Yes, we're cocks.

The British have been drinking to excess for centuries, and I don't see why it should stop now. I certainly don't get violent when I'm car parked (bonus point to the person who spots the reference ;) ) so I don't see why I should be denied a glass. Besides glasses work out cheaper for pubs, because you can only use plastic "pints" to serve beer once.

I'm 90% sure that's not the case. There are specific government stamped reusable polycarbonate glasses for sale. In fact, I'm pretty sure we used them for a stint in the pub I worked in when the dish washer went US and we needed more glassware while it was being repaired. You can treat them like any other glass. A lot of people didn't notice a big difference.

It's only the cheap, flimsy plastic glasses that can only be used once. They melt in the washer.

I worked in Yates' Portsmouth and we served glass in the day and plastic at night. I personally prefer the plastics as a member of staff. There's no hassle of broken glass if you/a customer drops one.

As a customer, my drink still tastes exactly the same, the 'glass' is the same thickness and roughly the same weight. I rarely notice that it's plastic. If I do, then it's usually once I've finished and you get a glimpse of the little pimple on the bottom like a coke bottle.

I'm all for plastic.

Depends what they are made out of I guess, if it's anything similar to the plastic water cups you get and the plastic bottles things like Coke come in then there is a danger of the chemicals leaking out carcinogens.

As to Nick's point, I agree I'd prefer plastic in a busy club or 'fancy pub' on a night out, but only from a safety point of view. I'd still rather go to a nice quiet pub and sip my pint from a glass.
