I don't really get the Russians' angle on this. I know they use Assad as a wind-up, but they normally leave themselves in a situation where they get a win no matter what. This looks like a lot of downside and nothing else :?

That last bit about being seen as an equal would go down much easier if they weren't continuously testing the border patrols of european countries.
