I wonder when and in which timeline it will be placed. |

I liked the idea I saw this year that would place a new series far enough away from the originals or the films to make that question moot. Explore the rich, fat, indolent federation |

A nice 80 - 100 year jump to the future or beyond like they did between TOS and TNG would be good or they could go much further. I guess in theory the alternate timeline created by Nero should resolve itself as they know when and where the 'supernova' occurs and can stomp on it before it destroys Romulus. |

It'll need to be to sustain it. 'Cross-demographic' will be a sh1tty necessity for the sort of cash being spent. And the geeks will watch it anyway, so... I'm looking forward to it as someone who thought the new films were 'decent'. |

Just as long as it's not a steaming turd like Enterprise. Will they they go for episode based stories like TNG/VOY or series long stories like DS9? |

I didn't mind Enterprise that much except for the trampling all over the chronology and ting and it did get better (well, apart from the theme tune). Of the three newer Trek's DS9 is definitely my favourite because it did story arcs longer than 2 or 3 episodes. To an extend Voyager did as well but they weren't as consistent. |

This isn't going to be some alternate timeline TOS reboot, to tie in with the new films, I hope. ![]() |

Oh it's the same bloke who did the reboot of Hawaii 50. So that's all good. |

I'm just going to come right out with it and state that it might not feature the USS Enterprise at all. There. It is said. Whatever the show does do, I think it should feature Wil Wheaton in a prominent role. That'd be great. Mark |

The problem with Trek is that is became so hung up on its own continuity that it ended up stifling itself. This wasn’t an issue when TNG started because the original Trek was pretty much a series of stand alone stories which can be viewed out of sequence (CBS Action is currently proving this). However, as TNG progressed, continuity started to creep in, and events in one episode would affect events in subsequent ones, even if they were a series or so apart. By the time they got to Voyager, they were very likely getting letters from uber nerds pointing out that such and such could not possibly happen because of some minutiae in a previous episode (and they could probably cite episode production references, script page numbers and more). So when Voyager came around, they tossed the whole bloody thing across the galaxy and said pretty much “up yours” in the hope that they could start again. Sadly, they spent far too much time fretting about the holodeck and how many times they could get Janeway to say the word “technology” to realise that they had effectively become soap opera writers. So they came up with the wheeze of as prequel, which was even MORE of a mistake because they had to retrofit everything to fit with all subsequent series, even going to the effort of slowly morphing displays on NX 01 to fit in with Kirk’s ship. They had to write continuity neutral stories because they knew they could never fit them to existing canon without being so constrained it would hurt. So they produced a kind of Star Trek that Wasn’t. When they got to the whole Xindi carving up Earth, we knew that they had dropped the ball because no one had ever mentioned that ever in any Trek that was supposed to follow. The production team made various platitudes about playing into the continuity loosely from then on, but it only works if you view it in isolation, and tell yours elf that “this isn’t really Trek”. So what they have to do now is distance their new series from the rest by a considerable distance so that, yes, they can look back, but they will not be constrained by the history. I alos hope the get the uniforms right this time. You can not take the Federation seriously if they send their best and brightest out in pyjamas. |

Meh, I didn't really have a huge issue with the uniforms once they got out of season 1 and 2 of TNG with the skin-tight spandex. Yes, they didn't look as military as the ones in say Babylon 5 or even the ones in the films from 2 - 6 but they were consistent and easy to understand. A bigger issue was the bizarre rank structure with no clear divisions between enlisted and commissioned for example (what the hell rank did Chief O'Brian actually hold - he had between 1 and 2 pips but which denoted either an Ensign or a Lieutenant but appeared to actually be a Chief Petty Officer). I guess that's getting a bit nit-picky though. ![]() |

Yes - the rank insignia was confused, especially when it comes to O’Brien. http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Starfleet_ranks I preferred the look of the uniforms in Star Treks 2-6, and I was happier about the TNG uniforms once Picard got a jacket. Despite what others may say, Star Fleet is a military organisation, and while the enterprise may be on a diplomatic mission, it’s clearly equipped to be a warship for some form. I just feel that the uniforms need to be a bit more sensible. |

Hmm, the way I saw it was that the uniforms in TNG and onwards were a kind of pragmatic acceptance that while they had to be smart, for the vast majority of the time comfort and utility were more important - like the 'work' uniforms in the Royal Navy. I'd certainly accept the argument that the bridge crew need to be a bit more dressed up as they can be having face to face contact with other folk but overall I think they managed to strike a reasonable balance, even if they do look a little bit like PJ's. |
