Your average kid or teenager wasn't sitting talking to their parents before tech came along. You'd be lucky if they ate their dinner round the TV together.

Also, the phone's a godsend when you've a family like mine who won't fcuk up and you need a distraction. I don't even mean them talking to me!

Or when you're in work and just wanna read something on your break without people making conversation you've absolutely no interest in. You can only take smalltalk so far/just wanna be left alone sometimes.

Exept that in the past, the parent usually banned books and papers at the table, and people actually sat at the table together and ate a meal together.

Due to differing work schedules, that is only something we manage at the weekend, but we do like to eat all at the table at the weekend, either for lunch or evening meal. And then it is no books, no papers, no magazines, no TV and no smartphones.
