The Turkish military have reportedly shot down a Russian military aircraft on the border with Syria.

Russia's defence ministry said an Su-24 had crashed on Syrian territory after being hit by fire from the ground, and that its pilots had managed to eject.

But Turkish military officials said Turkish F-16s had shot down the plane after repeatedly warning its pilots they were violating Turkish airspace.

There’s so much going on over Syria at the moment, that it wasn’t a case of if this kind of thing happened, but when. And now Cameron wants us to get involved.

Also, Turkey’s in NATO. :?

First of all, what common language are all the pilots supposed to be using? Could Russian and Turkish air force pilots actually communicate in any reasonable way?

English. Usually all pilot communications are in English.

So no agreement on how the Russian jet was shot down then.

Do they want to make Nato serve ISIS? I understand that every state has its own regional interests and we’ve always respected that, but we will never allow the kind of crime that happened to today to take place.* And of course we hope that the international community will find the strength to come together and fight against the common evil.

Now imagine if the game of chess, with all of its wonderful complexities, was played by seven players simultaneously on a single board, and just to add some spice, side-betting and alliances were allowed.

There is a game like that. It’s called Diplomacy.

I used to play it a lot.
The way you win is by being completely sincere and plausible with your partnerships, playing along with the agreements you make until the board is positioned in your favour and then wipe up everyone else.

Question....
At the speed that jet was going at (let's assume it was still subsonic), how long would it have been in Turkish airspace? Would that have given the Turks enough time to broadcast all the warnings they're claiming to have done? And then could the Russian jet have left their airspace any quicker than it did? What's the point for warning them if you're not giving them a chance to leave?
