George Osborne scraps tax credit cuts in welfare U-turn | UK news | The Guardian
http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015 ... -statement

I've suddenly remembered that we've got all this money - just in time for this statement. I want you to focus on that, and certainly not my u-turn, kicking non-voters in the balls, or that I'm killing opposition funding.

The whole thing is bordering on bizarre. The OBR alters one of it's simulation models for who-knows-what reason and as a result the chancellor has tens of billions of pounds he previously didn't have! What if the OBR's previous model actually turns out to be better than the new version? By the time we find that out we'll be billions of pounds more in debt and George will be going for 'three strikes and you're out' on his target of balancing the nations finances.

Taking this administration's famous 'national finances are just like personal finances' analogy, what's just happened is someone at work suggests to me I'm probably going to get a pay rise in six months time, so I go out tomorrow and buy a new car. If I actually did that, people would think I was a chuffing imbecile.

The OBR is still unsure of the numbers, it would seem. At least according to the Guardian

It's only £27bn - it's not like it a large sum or anything - probably a minor rounding error. ;)
