UK floods: 'Complete rethink needed' on flood defences - BBC News
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35188146

I was just reading an article about how much the MoD pisses up the wall with regards to the navy (you're talking millions in advertisements that preceded less people joining, never mind the usual billion pound farces), so how about we use some of that money in future? Why not, we're already having to use soldiers...

Less than 1% of the army are involved in the floods oop north, it's not really as big a thing as they are trying to make out out to be.

As for the navy passing billions up the wall, well you could start with Trident.

P!ssing money up the wall is hardly restricted to the Navy, it's a joyous part of defence spending as a whole.
If it keeps on raining like this the Navy might actually be able to send their ships into city centres to help

I think the news this morning said there were about 500 soldiers helping with the flooding issues. Hardly a lot of people in the grand scheme of things, not to spread over the entire North West of England.

And if we build on flood plains, we either expect and accept that this will happen, or we have to look at a completely different style of architecture. Sadlly, though, the kind of architecture that puts houses in stilts is the kind that planners are terrified of, and house builders seem to have no knowledge of. They just throw up the standard issue houses and shrug their shoulders when water gets in.

There's also an issue with free farming, water is not being absorbed into fields anymore but drains directly into rivers, making problems worse
