The Tories? Accusing someone of peddling myths? Oh the irony. |

It always seems, looking at the UK from Europe, that the UK's problems with Europe lay with the UK Government. There are subsidies for a lot of things - heck, our small company has been involved in several EU research projects into RFID technologies. But the UK seems reluctant, or rather the UK Government seems reluctant to take any subsidies, because it would mean a smaller rebate for the Treasury at the end of the year. So instead of letting companies, farmers etc. get the subsidies that they could claim, they are dissuaded, so that the Treasury gets some money back. Then they claim that the EU is useless and a waste of money... |

This is definitely true in respect to the flooding. The EU has a 'natural disaster relief fund' which the UK is eligible to request support from, but any money the fund sends us has to be paid back out of our rebate later (to top the fund back up, which seems pretty reasonable). The UK government refuses to ask for the money, which would help people who have had their houses ruined or their farmland or businesses damaged, because it will mean the treasury will have to give the money back later. then they make a big announcement of giving government money to the flood victims which is less than they'd be eligible for from the EU. It is, frankly, disgraceful. |
