Quote:
Taxpayers could end up out of pocket because not enough private firms want to bid to run rail franchises in England and Wales, MPs have warned.

A lack of competition between companies bidding to operate routes could mean the government struggles to get value for money, a report by the Public Accounts Committee said.

MPs said it was "not clear" when rail users will see higher quality services.

Running a train service isn’t cheap, and looking at some of the news stories floating around recently, you get the distinct impression that moving trains from point A to point B is something of an inconvenience that gets in the way of paying shareholders. When franchises are only two years long, like they are here, it’s hardly a surprise that no one is interested.

Does it have anything to do with the government blatantly favouriting First over Virgin for WCML?

the railway network and everything that runs on it would be better off being nationalized.
i also believe that parliament should have an all party committee (convened from all of them) where no elected party can interfere
classic example HS1&2 a vanity project ...

ps. i believe this also for the NHS.

Plus the profit margin on rail franchises is very small. I think 3-4% the last I heard.

3-4% isn't that bad an RoI over a long term provided it's quite stable.
