The internet advertising industry only has itself to blame.

I'm just waiting for 3 (or anyone else) to start letting through 'carefully vetted' adverts.

Doning my tinfoil hat for a moment I suspect will be less about protecting end users from crappy ads and more about getting a slice of advertising revenue. Not all at once, but eventually.

Could lead to some interesting challenges on Net Neutrality grounds.

You also have to ask: SHOULD the network be blocking content anyway?

You've got two conflicting conflicting customer demands here

1) I get ads I don't want! Stop them using up my data allocation!
2) Stop censoring my internet!

If you can think of a way to easily reconcile those two demands, I'm sure they'd be all ears.

Ads used to be fairly simple affairs - banners that occupied a known location. They were, if you were unlucky, animated GIFs, but even those were easy to live with.

Then they started becoming Flash animations, which started to take over the whole page or an expanded area larger than the area that appeared to occupy when in a "resting" state.

Now they seem to like video or audio, some starting without any input from the user. Others block the entire page awaiting you to click a close button, or worse, filling in a questionnaire before showing you the content. Some even have a delay, so your reading is interrupted.

The issue I have with adverts is no their existence, but their continued intrusion, placing themselves higher in priority than the content that they purport to support.

I installed an Adblocker on my phone a couple of weeks ago.

Actually typing that out makes it sound just as ridiculous as it actually is.
