Hinkley Point C nuclear deal contains £22bn 'poison pill' for taxpayer So, in summary - EDF (or someone else, since they seem to want out) build the reactor. The British electricity consumer - i.e. pretty much all of us - have been pressganged into paying three times the market rate for electricity generated for the next 35 years. if at any point in the next 45 years the plant is forced to close, we (i.e. the taxpayer) have to pay the builder compensation of 22 billion pounds.
And yet it's labour who have the reputation of being financially incompetent? |

While I'm personally in favour of having some element of nuclear in the power mix even I have to admit that this seems like an awful deal and it just seems to keep getting worse. I wonder how far it has to go before even the Tories have to admit that there are some things the market can't do (I won't be holding my breath mind). |

Given the deal, I don't think we can say for certain any negotiating went on. It almost looks like the builders put in a typical piss-take first draft contract and the government said 'yeah, OK then.' Jon |

I wonder how the deal struck by the UK government compares with the deals struck by EDF to build similar plants in France and Finland. Neither of which they've yet completed. |
