Families watching the station after finishing their roast dinners were apparently left "traumatised" after Watership Down came on.

The 1978 animation, based on the novel written by Richard Adams , features the slaughter of bunny rabbits.

Oh, FFS. The film has been out for long enough for people to know what it's about, and the book for much longer (do people read any more?). So if you let your little cherubs watch the film and they are traumatised by it, then it's not Channel 5's fault. It's your's.

Also, just for the record, the last screen shot in the Mirror's article is from the TV series that was made about 10 years later.

Apart from anything else, it's massively trivialising the word 'traumatised'.

I watched it as a 10 year old in the cinema, I didn't find it traumatising, I found it eye opening.

I would say Watership Down is moving.
If you're 'traumatised' by it then you'd better hope you never find out what bunnies get up to in the real world. Or pretty much any other wild animal for that matter.

The book does it far, far better. There’s a whole rabbit culture - even a religion - that guides and educates the as they find their way to their new home. Well worth a read.

Isn't the whole thing basically an allegory for WWI?

Watership Down 'would be rated PG today' says BBFC head

The U-rated 1978 film Watership Down would be classified PG were it released today, the new head of the British Board of Film Classification has said.
BBFC director David Austin told BBC Radio 5 live its violence was "arguably too strong" for it to be rated U now.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-35924936

Noting that on its release in the 1970s, Alien was an X (effectively the equivalent of an 18 now). When it had it”s re-release, the recut earned a 15 certificate.

The BBFC have never had a clue. Recent example, Grimsby being a 15!

I think they still make (or did until relatively recently) Tom and Jerry cartoons.
From memory I don't think you usually see much blood in a T&J cartoon whereas Watership down is rather more graphic (and involves less frying pan related violence :D ).

There's a new series running on Boomerang at the moment.
