A BBC sitcom has been criticised as "Islamophobic" during a Commons debate about whether the BBC's programmes and staff reflect UK diversity.

Labour's Rupa Huq criticised Citizen Khan's depiction of a "quite backward" family of Muslims.

No. It’s just dreadful. I was amazed that it got a second series.

Quote:
A BBC spokesman said: "The fact that Citizen Khan returns for its fifth series this year is a sign of its popularity with all audiences - indeed the show has won several awards, including Best TV character at the Asian Media Awards.

Apart from the whole “Islamophobia” thing, the format, writing, acting and even premise is so very 1970s, it’s painful to watch.

And to be totally honest, when I see it I can’t help remembering Michael Bates in It Ain’t Half Hot Mum.

If Citizen Khan was written by a white man, people would be crying “racist”.

If yer auntie had balls.. Surprisingly enough, the race/religion/culture of the program maker is relevant here.

Citizen Khan is rubbish, but it is by definition not racist.

As above, it's a comedy based on Muslims written by a Muslim. It's a bit like Goodness Gracious Me but just not as funny.

To be fair they're not quite the same kind of show - GGM was a sketch show whereas Citizen Khan is a very straight sitcom. However I think the idea that both were simply comedy specific to their own culture is overstated. Much of 'Citizen Khan' is in fact almost identical to much of 'Terry & June'. It's about pomposity and social climbing and stupidity and those are not characteristics confined to one racial group. Equally while GGM's sketches were viewed through the lens of Asian culture, they were again about characteristics we all share - pride, greed, general bad behaviour, the expectations of parents and the rebelliousness of children. GGM's most famous sketch was a parody of the behaviour of White English people..

There is racism in the world and it's effects are horrible. But the fact a group of muslims are confident enough to make a show which, while actually quite staid and traditional, is painted with the palette of their culture and that this show is prime time on the UK's national network is actually a good thing. I'd prefer it if it was more innovative and sharper but the fact it exists as it does cheers me on one level.
