Over here you can only legally fly them at a model aircraft airfield and it is totally illegal to fly them in built up areas or around airports; they are still classified as remote controlled flying models. The problem is, most people don't realise that and fly them anywhere they want. |

There are tough rules here too. Not within a built up area, within range of people. Most manufacturers have “dead zones” built in, so that they don’t fly at altitude (or at all) in certain places. However, it is possible to build your own, so no fly zones are only enforced in commercially available models. I am assuming, from the above, that this is one of a toy or prosumer models, not a professional one which will be operated under CAA rules (CAA certification is an annual renewal, very costly, and required for any commercial work). So, a drone is something that I’d like to have - having spoken to a few operators, they seem to be a very regarding thing to own and fly - but there are idiots out there who really have little or no idea of what they are doing. Now we’ll have people thinking “well, if they can fly one near an aircraft, how long before hey send one up with explosives on it?”. I expect to see some kind of licensing or registration requirement for any drone soon - commercial or amateur. |
