Google's DeepMind shouldn't suck up our NHS records in secret | Opinion | The Guardian

WTF is the NHS doing?! Did I somehow miss this story on the day it broke, or did nobody bother their arse at the likes of the BBC? :?

Didn't we have this debate when the government of the day had to row back on proposals to give out patient data until they said otherwise?

I'm all for seeing what DeepMind can do, but Google can fcuking find volunteers.

You do realise there's no such thing as 'The NHS' any more, don't you? Just a collection of more or less autonomous 'trusts' which are to all intents and purposes private businesses (although essentially not for profit) the Department of Health purchases services from? It's rather more complicated than that in detail, but that's the essence of it. The trusts can do this kind of stuff off their own bat if they want to.

I was going for brevity - I am a Private Eye reader lol. Even I thought the trusts would have had more wit than this, though.

Though I guess it only really matters if the press can be truly bothered...
