I’ve been away over the weekend, and come back to find that there’s no mention of Prince in the news section.
Blimey.

Quote:
Sales of Prince's music have skyrocketed since his death last Thursday, at the age of 57.

The Very Best of Prince and Purple Rain hold the number one and two spot respectively in the US Billboard chart.

I was never a fan - though I do get that he was very good at what he did, and there is some guitar work I’ve heard that I like. I think he sounded so very, very 1980s even IN the 1980s. He was using the same kinds of sounds and rhythms that many others were doing, but he somehow managed to increase the intensity. Sadly, to my ears, it‘s not aged that well, and the pretty much saturation over the weekend on the radio really tells me that either (a) his range was fairly limited or (b) the selections played on the radio was limited.

Apparently, there’s material for 100 years of albums in his vault should they release one a year.

FFS. Here's hoping Olly Murs doesn't die anytime soon.

Forget Murs, it's Bieber you have to worry about, especially the way he's been spamming 'music' recently.

For pop music Bieber's more recent stuff hasn't been that bad (e.g. What Do You Mean which clearly was influenced by working with Diplo and Skrillex on Where Are U Now).

Now I'm off to give myself 100 lashes for saying as much.

I have two things that Prince was involved in. The Bangle’s Different Light album. He wrote “Manic Monday”, but other tacks on the album feel like he’s there in the background fiddling.

Also Tim Burton’s Batman on VHS somewhere.

And that‘s it.

I always thought he was highly over-rated. A couple of decent-ish pop songs and an ego that could fill a Zeppelin.

However, now he's dead, we can expect millions of tw@ts claiming he was a seminal influence in their lives, just to get in on the grieving trend. Pfft!

For me they were a perfect combo of evocative lyrics, beat and tempo. That's what I find with all my favourite bands too (GNR, Queen as two examples), so I like that he apparently came up with and performed the vast majority of the work himself.
