The smartphone market is becoming increasingly homogeneous. Plus the majority of phones (both Apple and the rest) are now effectively as powerful as anybody needs them to be, so the incentive to upgrade is simply about the attraction of the new, which much fewer people have than analysts seem to assume. Given Apple have always tended to grab most of the profit in the market, if Apple are seeing less cash I can't imagine what HTC & LG for example are seeing.

EDIT : Many, many graphs that break the numbers down

I know a few people who were previously serial upgraders that have decided their current phone is perfect for their needs and have gone SIM only at renewal time.

Personally, I'm rarely in an area with 3G or 4G long enough to benefit from have a top end phone - my Moto G3 should last a good long time.

I thought I'd upgrade every two years. Bought the 3GS. Bought the 4S. Decided the 5S wasn't worth the jump. I didn't feel that same urge to upgrade. By the time I did, I bought the 6S.

Given some of the utterly stupid things he was demanding Apple do and using his shareholding as a justification of the fact, I suspect they will very much not miss his contribution. I also suspect he nevertheless made a healthy profit out of the whole thing.

Not entirely a surprise though is it? There's a long history of Chinese courts finding in favour of Chinese companies infringing the IP of western companies. They have a fundamentally different view of how copyright is supposed to work.

I mean, for pete's sake.
