Passengers on London buses could soon be receiving push notifications with real-time travel updates and in-app ads thanks to "the UK's largest iBeacon experience".

A collaboration between mobile marketing company Proxama and Transport for London will allow integration of the beacon system into an app in what they catchily call a "utility-led consumer engagement experience".

Well, you'll need an app for this to work, so I expect to se that being pushed hard.

I remember a few years ago, there were TV screens on the busses in London pumping adverts at you. Very annoying, and frequently vandalised. They've gone now.

Hey, who wants to read some grade 1A bullish!t?

At some point, people are going to wake up to the realisation that advertising is annoying and should not be on everywhere.

In theory it's possible to push directly to a phone without an app if it's signed correctly by Apple etc
You can also track ID's etc on them which could negate the need for an Oyster card

I've only ever done it with a chicken so far, but if required I wouldn't have any problems doing it with other animals at all.

I can't imagine even Apple would be crazy enough to allow a third party to send push notifications to their user's phones without consent of some sort. That's a recipe for mass migration to other platforms.

You can do location based alerts via bluetooth, but that requires the person receiving them to have their phone's bluetooth on, in discover mode and unsecured. You'd be strongly advised against doing that on public transport anywhere, any time.
