Not surprising. America fears China expanding in the far east. They want everyone there well armed to try and persuade China not to do anything silly against weak countries.
It doesn't help that China doesn't recognise international standards on territorial waters. It claims a lot of ocean in that part of the world as theirs, even if everyone else thinks it's not. They've been building man made islands to militarise.
