To be fair if 50% of the jobs in an industry rely on that industry being subsidised by the government, it's actually not all that much of an industry.

I think should be encouraging solar power take up so I'm actually in favour of making it easy and cheap for people to do so but it has to operate at some level of self-sufficiency, or you just might as well have the government write cheques to people directly like the car scrappage scheme. Giving companies money which they can then give to shareholders where they otherwise would make a loss is subsidising share ownership, not power generation.

The UK solar industry is largely made up of foreign workers - lot of Spanish/Portuguese and South American "specialists" are involved. Including, in my experience, some of the general labourers - they come over as a team.

Half of 35,000? 17,500 is not even close to the 110,000 jobs lost in the UK oil industry over the last couple of years.
