That's a fine principle but in the process, as things stand, we're encouraging/forcing them into the hands of exploitative people traffickers and/or into making incredibly dangerous journeys across the Med and etc. That's like saying "yes we'll happily put you up just as soon as you get here. Afraid someone's left a damn minefield in the way though. Sorry about that". It is, frankly, cobblers.

It is a very, very, VERY rare thing where I agree with David Cameron on anything but the government plan to go to refugee camps nearer the places of conflict, process the refugees there and then ship the ones who qualify and we have space for over safely is a much, much smarter way of doing it. He and I massively disagree about how big the number involved should be but his methodology is absolutely sound. That is what the EU should be doing collectively. But instead we're approaching it piecemeal and it's a disaster.

Oh I agree with you 100%, that's an infinitely better way to do things than just allowing them access once they get here. The notion that sinking their boats was in any way, acceptable needed to be most emphatically countered.
