Soldier killed during live shooting exercise in Northumberland | UK news | The Guardian

Quote:
Earlier this year, the Unite union warned that the firing range risked becoming “a death trap” when the role of wardens, who prevented people walking into the line of fire, was withdrawn as part of a cost-cutting drive.

In the 16 years to February 2016, 135 UK armed forces personnel died while on training or exercise. Eleven of those deaths occurred during live fire exercises.

WTF? Quite apart from the absolute waste of life, it costs an absolute fortune to train soldiers.

This happens more often than they let on. Years ago my mate Ben had to have his heart restarted on a training exercise. Him and another trainee missing a swimming exercise the previous day, had to do it that morning, then did the endurance exercise later that day. They weren't allowed water on the exercise and both collapsed. He was given a medical discharge after that.
Apparently all that happened to the bloke in charge was he was sent back to his unit from Sandhurst.
