At least they have proper sentences over there. He'd probably have gotten six months if he'd done that here.

Turns out you're not far off.

He probably would have been considered as category 1, which is 2.5-4 years, but the minimum sentence for aggravated GBH is indeed 6 months. Certainly not 40 years i.e. effectively a life sentence.
