In London, private hire never had a good name. I don't know how it is generally in the UK, but here in Germany Uber is complaining about unfar conditions, yet its only problem is that it doesn't follow the law and has therefore been declared illegal*.
* in Germany you need a professional driving licence in order to carry paying passengers. Without it, you cannot get commercial insurance for the transportation of passengers. With a normal driving licence, you can only carry passengers to and from your normal place of work or to a destination that you wanted to travel to, and you cannot ask for more compensation than their share of the fuel for the trip.
Uber does not ensure that its drivers have the relevant licence and therefore most of its driver were driving illegally. If they were caught, they would lose their licence and the insurance company would revoke the insurance. If they had an accident, then the insurance would not pay and the driver would sit on the repair and compensation costs.
Uber didn't make that clear, meaning that many drivers were unaware of this and that most passengers were riding at their own risk and would have to sue the driver for compensation, in the event of injury, meaning the driver would probably file for bankruptcy.
