So Mr 'Grab 'em by the pussy' is now President elect, by 276 to 218 electoral votes. All we can hope for now is that by the time of the next election, America has found two candidates that aren't quite so awful.

Look at the bright side. At least Americans will have to stop laughing at us for Brexit.

I have a feeling nuclear/survival bunkers will be a thing, again.

But why? I mean according to the new president Mr Putin is a great guy. Also, Trump doesn't seem to bothered about abiding by article 5 of the NATO treaty (an attack on one is an attack on all) so he'll probably be pretty sanguine if Russian tanks start rolling across Eastern Europe - it's not like that would be any sort of threat to the US after all On a more serious note, the Republicans now control all three arms of the US government, what could possibly go wrong? I mean, people were angry with being ignored and felt they were being taken for a ride by big business and globalisation so they voted in a president who is all about big business and who has an interesting track record on the employment of migrant workers to keep wages low. Not, alas, that the UK is any paragon of virtue in this regard either right enough.

In the first 2 years of his second term, GWB had the same. He tried to get some fairly sensible Social Security reform done and the Congressional Republicans flipped him the bird because that's called the third rail for a reason. Obama had a super-majority minus 1 in the Senate for 2 years. But most of the Dems in the senate were glad he couldn't get that one extra seat to break filibusters with, because it would have placed a burden on them to vote through legislation that would lose them their own seats 2 years later. They were happy to knife their president in the back (and they still lost their seats). So GITMO never got closed, Obamacare got watered down to the point of serving little purpose etc. Senate Republicans will probably have some maths available to them soon. It will tell them how many in their constituents only voted on Tuesday because Trump was on the ticket. That won't be true when half of them are up for re-election. The difference between pollsters "likely voters" and the actual voters on Tuesday suggests that those in contested seats will not want to back anything controversial that Trump throws their way. Congress is usually fairly disloyal anyway. It's hard to imagine the guy who tweets insults at C list celebs at 3am taking that very well. It will melt the orange right off his face.

http://www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2016-37963965It wouldn't have helped, but Trump was the guy nobody told their nearest and dearest they voted for if I had to guess. Though I believe in years to come we'll find out the truth of the FBI intervention - that outfit has been slowly going rogue since 9/11, right down to the killing of an informer/suspect.

http://www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2016-37966027Trump won't do half the things he said, though he should definitely push for leverage with both of the talking shops. It would just be nice if he wouldn't involve Camp Vladimir...

So, what is new? Obama said that the first thing he would do, when in office, would be to close Guantanamo and the first thing he would do, when in office, would be to recall all troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. I guess, therefore, that he never actually took office...

No president gets to do all the things he says he wants to do, that's just the reality. I think this may be the first time quite a lot of people are praying this president gets to do NONE of the things he said he'd do...

So, Steve Bannon has been appointed to a senior Whitehouse position. Rather sets the tone.
