I've always said this - the government is not reading your emails because your emails have nothing in them the government wants or needs to know. This is true of 99.9% of people. I understand the principle that the government should not be reading your emails, but that's not a technical problem, that requires you not to vote for a bunch of bastards who will, and people seem to find that hard for some reason...

Turns out this is going into the region of fake news / was misrepresented by a reporter that didn't fully understand cryptography... Signal is, allegedly, safe and there is no backdoor.

I think it depends on which report you read. As far as I understand it there is no problem with the underlying Signal protocol itself rather it's what Whatsapp has done to it for their own purposes. They've added a facility to effective intercept and relay messages with their own certificates/keys without this triggering an alert for the user.
