SSE customers charged up to £33,000 a day by faulty smart meters

They keep bugging me to sign up for smart meters. On this basis it's hardly encouraging me to do so.
Mind you, I take and submit a meter reading every month so my bills are pretty accurate anyway.

I submit my meter readings on the first day of every month.

I've heard lots of stories about how smart meters are a way of spying on residents and charging for more for when they're likely to use their gas/electricity, and of how they have the ability to remotely disconnect your supply. No idea how much of it is true (I suspect none to very little).

The first time they came to me to fit a smart meter, they said the phone signal wasn't strong enough.
The second time they said the location of the gas meter didn't meet current safety regulations so they refused to replace it.
Still on the old fashioned meters here.

never had them come round to try

We have an old gas meter - all in Ft lbs - so they would need to replace it an I bet its location is not up with current standards

Depends. Apparently it needs to be against a wall. Ours comes up a foot away from any wall (under the stairs). They couldn't secure it to modern standards.
