Theresa May seeks general election - BBC News
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-39628713

I expect lots of talk about families and strivers, bit of implied immigrant blaming, and the usual 'Labour can't be trusted at such a time of economic importance'. And they can't, but that's only because they're currently hopeless full stop. If this doesn't spur Corbyn into action nothing will.

i don't think she had any other choice.
reasons ...
Cameron resigning
having a small majority
needing a mandate from the voters
legal challenges over Brexit which continue
the remain camp still not abiding by the result (your 2nd referendum is here)
SNP Indy Indy Indy at ever turn or word spoken
being undermined by Parliament and the Lords over EU negotiations

i predict an outcome of a massive Govt. majority which should put the remain camp to rest once and for all.

just as a side note.
for the first time ever in my 60 years on this planet i will be voting Tory and im not alone ...

She needs to get 2/3 of MP's to agree to hold an election first. That's not necessarily garunteed although I'm sure the Murdoch press will do their damdest to pain any MP who doesn't vote for it as an enemy of the people.
She's said repeatedly that she wouldn't do exactly this.

Fun and games to come no doubt.

And exactly how has the remain camp not abided by the result? This is democracy FFS, if you don't like something you campaign against it or are you saying that, had the result gone the other way, the brexiteers such as yourself would have shut up about not getting your way?

Corbyn has said he'll set the Labour whip to support the motion to bypass the Fixed Term Act. That's more than enough Talk about turkeys voting for Christmas. I suspect quite a lot of 'remainer' labour voters will be seriously considering switching to the lib-dems. As in fact will some of the more centre leaning remainer tories. I think there's a distinct possibility of a hung parliament TBH.

That puts the brakes on the Brexit negotiations too. No one is going to want to talk about such things with a country whose government could change in a month or so. So three months off the 24 we have.

To be fair, nothing substantive was likely to happen until France and Germany have had their elections either but yeah, great time to run down the clock

Of course there is a possibility that we will elect a government who realise what a ridiculous path the UK is going down and stop our withdrawal from the EU.

Careful now, that's 'Enemy of the people' talk, well of the 52% that turned up and voted for Brexit anyway and that appears to be the only thing that's important to an awful lot of politicians these days

Seems a daft time given we've just triggered Article 50 and can't untrigger it.
Surely it would have been better to get Brexit out of the way first.

i believe there is a bigger reason behind it such as having a mandate for a no deal brexit, just a thought ...

Possible. I suspect they will try to make it about 'giving them a mandate', but the bare fact is a general election should not be about any single issue - the government we elect now will be in power for three years after brexit, and will also be able to make changes to our laws and society which are nothing to do with our relationship with Europe.

GE's are important, not just a tool to get you the veil of popularity for your pet issue. And It's not as if there's any real actual opposition to Brexit within parliament anyway. Corbyn is patently in favour of it regardless of what he says (actions speak louder than words) and, assuming labour MPs don't go completely feral, will almost certainly back whatever the government ends up with. That's all that it needs. The SNP and lib-dems (and other stragglers) don't actually have enough numbers to do anything about it at all without labour backing and a few rebel tories.

The GE isn't in any way necessary to give May a 'mandate' - they've been charging along whatever path they please for the last nine months claiming 'the will of the people' anyway, so it's not as if they need anything more.

This is simple political opportunism - May thinks she can increase her parties majority so she's going for it. And for Christ knows what reason Labour have decided to let her do it. I simply cannot fathom what is going on inside Labour right now that makes them think a GE right now is a good idea for them.
